Hiking The Narrows at Zion National Park, Local Tips and Suggestions

Tips, Best Time, and What to Bring

Are you planning a trip to Zion National Park? The most popular things to do in Zion are the incredible hikes offered at every corner.  The must-see hike on your list should be The Narrows. This iconic gorge, carved by the Virgin River, offers stunning scenery and a unique opportunity to “hike” through water. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a first-time adventurer, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about visiting The Narrows at Zion.

What is The Narrows Hike in Zion National Park?

The Narrows hike is one of the top slot canyon hikes in Zion National Park, offering a unique adventure through the Virgin River.  It is the narrowest part of Zion Canyon that takes you through a gorge where canyon walls soar as high as 1,000 ft. and the river as narrow as just 20 feet wide in some places. The trail itself is the Virgin River, so prepare to get your feet wet!  This hike is renowned for its scenic beauty and the adventure of walking through the river, which can vary in depth depending on the time of year and water flow conditions.

Best Time to Hike The Narrows

While Zion is certainly a year-round destination, the ideal time to visit The Narrows is typically during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall.  Remember you’ll be in a slot canyon, so it can get a tad bit chilly in the shade depending on the time of year.  From May through September, the temperatures are ideal for river hiking, with daytime temperatures ranging from the 70s°F low 90s°F.  During the summer especially, however, the trail can be extremely crowded, so that is something to keep in mind.

If you’re looking to avoid crowds, consider hiking in early spring or late fall, but be prepared for cooler temperatures and the possibility of higher water flow.  The trail is often closed during early spring due to the risk of flash flood warnings and unsafe conditions, so be sure to check conditions before planning your excursion.

  • Best time to visit: late spring to early fall (May-September)
  • Best time to avoid crowds: early spring to late fall
  • Be sure to check conditions

Where to Start Your Hike: Getting to The Narrows Trailhead

To access The Narrows, take the free Zion Canyon Shuttle from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. From March through November private vehicles are not allowed in the canyon. The shuttle is the only transportation available. The shuttle stops at The Temple of Sinawava where the hike begins.

For visitors from December through February except for the holiday season (Dec 20-29), you may drive directly to the Temple of Sinawava parking lot and start your hike from there.

How to Hike The Narrows

There are two main ways to experience The Narrows: the Bottom-Up and Top-Down hikes.

1. Bottom-Up Hike (Recommended for First-Time Visitors)

The Bottom-Up hike, the most popular way to experience The Narrows, begins at the Temple of Sinawava and does not require a permit. This hike follows the Virgin River upstream, and is about 10 miles round trip.  What’s great about this option is that you may turn back at any point.  This makes for an excellent option for beginners, older children, or those looking for a shorter adventure.

  • Distance: Up to 6 miles round trip (go as short or long as you want)
  • Permits: Not required
  • Time: 1–8 hours, depending on how far you go
  • Trailhead: Temple of Sinawava
  • Transportation: Shuttle

The Bottom-Up hike allows you to see some of the most spectacular and narrowest parts of the canyon. You can hike in the river for an hour and have a great experience, or you can hike as far as Big Spring, a strenuous all-day adventure. You’ll experience the stunning canyon walls along with incredible rock formations along the way.  Be prepared to get wet as you are hiking through the river and can rise above ankle-deep in places.

2. Top-Down Hike (For Experienced Hikers)

The Top-Down hike is more challenging, and requires a permit and a longer time commitment. This hike begins at the Chamberlain’s Ranch trailhead at the top of the canyon and follows the river all the way down to the Temple of Sinawava, covering about 16 miles. It’s an all-day adventure that typically takes 10-12 hours to complete, with steep climbs and challenging water conditions along the way.

  • Distance: 16 miles
  • Permits: Required
  • Time: 10–12 hours
  • Trailhead: Chamberlain’s Ranch
  • Transportation: Arrange your own

The Top-Down hike is a one-way trail, and those who choose this option will need to arrange for transportation to the Chamberlain’s Ranch trailhead and at the Temple of Sinawava after completing the trail.

What to Bring on The Narrows Hike

The Narrows hike can be physically demanding, especially since you’ll be walking through the river in places. Here’s a checklist of items you’ll need for a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • Water Shoes or Canyon Footwear: These provide better grip and comfort than traditional hiking boots when walking in the river.
  • Waterproof Backpack: To protect your personal items, especially if you plan to take a camera.
  • Sticks or Trekking Poles: These help with balance when walking in the river, especially on slippery rocks.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Plenty of Water and Snacks: Bring hydration and energy for the hike, especially if you plan to go for several hours.
  • Extra Layer: Even in warmer weather, the air can be chilly, especially in shaded areas.

Safety Tips for Hiking The Narrows

  • Check Water Levels and Weather: Flash floods can occur unexpectedly, so always check the weather forecast and current river conditions before starting the hike. Zion’s website and the visitor center provide up-to-date information on the trail’s status.
  • Know Your Limits: If you’re not comfortable wading through fast-moving water, consider turning back when the river gets deeper or the current gets stronger.
  • Leave No Trace: Be sure to pack out all trash and leave the canyon as pristine as you found it.

What to Expect During the Hike

Expect incredible natural beauty as you make your way through the river, and the views only get better the further you go, with smaller waterfalls, lush vegetation, and dramatic rock formations all around. Keep your camera handy!  This is one hike you’ll want to remember!
